A face recognition terminal captures a facial pattern and matches it without physical contact. Modern systems can recognize employees reliably with minor lighting changes, and increasingly even with a mask on.
Face recognition is the better fit when:
- Touchless verification matters—healthcare, food handling, hygiene-sensitive sites
- Employees wear gloves or work in dusty or wet conditions
- Speed matters at high-traffic entry points
Extreme lighting (strong backlight, near-total darkness) can affect accuracy more than fingerprint, though modern sensors have narrowed this gap.
Accuracy: is one actually more accurate?
Both achieve high accuracy in well-maintained conditions. The more useful question is which holds up in your environment. A clean office shows little difference; a warehouse, hospital ward, or construction site often favors face recognition because it does not depend on finger contact.
